今週の6 minute Englishのテーマは"The benefits of schadenfreude"でした。
"schadenfreude"とは、「他人の不幸を喜ぶ気持ち」という意味を表す単語です。
ドイツの言葉だそうでここではloanword(外来語)と表現してました。
この他人の不幸を喜ぶ気持ち(schadenfreude)はどのような場面で発生するのか。
これに関して、その不幸が妥当であるとき、人は他人の不幸を喜ぶと述べていました。
例えば、転売に対して断固反対している人が
実際は高額転売を繰り返していて、警察に逮捕されたらどう思うでしょうか。
「いい気味だなぁ」とほくそ笑むでしょう。
なぜなら、その人は自分が他人に忠告していることを自分で実践できていないからです。
そういった人達は偽善者(hypocrites)であり、不幸があれば喜ばれる対象となる。
しかし、他人の不幸に対して喜ぶだけでなく、同情する(commiserate)ことも大切だと述べていました。
今週は単語も会話文も難しかったですね。。。

同じ単語でも国によって異なる意味を示す単語をfalse cognates あるいは false friendsと呼ぶみたいです。
そこでratはドイツではどんな意味を示すのかという問題でした。
英語ではネズミを表しますが、ドイツではc)のadviceの意味で使われるそうです！
